Dark and translucent teeth

Treatment

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening has been used in dentistry since the start of the 1990s.

It is a safe technique, efficient in most cases and, when compared with other cosmetic procedures, it is the cheapest and most conservative. If teeth whitening is desired, it must always be done prior to any cosmetic treatment.

Case 1

In this case, the patient’s only cosmetic concern was the colour of her teeth and wished they were lighter. Teeth whitening was done, and the desired result achieved.

Case 2

Patient desired lighter teeth and wanted to alter the edges and angles of their teeth.

Teeth whitening was executed with stunning results. Following this, composite edge bonding was done.

See also Case 2 under Incisal angle for the final result after treatment with composite bonding.

Treatment

Veneers on Dark Teeth

Usually after trauma and/or root canal treatment, teeth tend to darken over time. In these cases, it is necessary to drill a little bit of the enamel as thicker composite is needed to mask the discolouration.

Case 1

Patient with a very dark central incisor that has had root canal treatment wanted to improve the appearance of her smile in the most conservative way possible. In the case of very dark teeth, a small amount of drilling is necessary.

The patient’s right lateral incisor also needed a slight wear at its edge as it was longer than the surrounding teeth. No drilling was done on any other tooth, only composite bonding was added. The patient opted for four composite veneers on the incisors.

Case 2

Patient with a dark central incisor that had undergone root canal treatment wanted a solution for this tooth only as he was already happy with the remaining teeth.

Aware of the challenge that is treating a single tooth, he opted for a composite veneer.

Case 2

Patient with a dark central incisor that had undergone root canal treatment wanted a solution for this tooth only as he was already happy with the remaining teeth.

Aware of the challenge that is treating a single tooth, he opted for a composite veneer.

Case 3

Patient had two dark incisors on their right-hand side with prior cosmetic treatment and a big gap between the front teeth. The patient decided on two composite veneers and composite bonding on the left incisor to reduce the gap.

Treatment

Changing Old Veneers

No restorative cosmetic material (be it porcelain or composite) lasts forever. At some point, for some reason, it must be redone to renew the smile’s aesthetic.

Case 1

Patient had composite veneers done many years ago on the lateral incisors and on the right central. He opted to continue with the same material. The veneers were therefore removed and remade with composite.

Case 2

Patient with agenesis of the lateral incisors had two porcelain veneers done many years ago over the canines which are in place of the lateral incisors.

The left-hand veneer had fractured. Both were removed and done with composite as opted by the patient.

Case 2

Patient with agenesis of the lateral incisors had two porcelain veneers done many years ago over the canines which are in place of the lateral incisors.

The left-hand veneer had fractured. Both were removed and 8 new composite were done, improving the proportions of his teeth.

Treatment

Translucent Teeth

Some people have translucent teeth, which gives them a grey shade. This can cause discomfort due to a change in the smile’s aesthetic.

Case 1

Patient did not like the translucence of her upper teeth. In this case, the patient opted for 10 composite veneers with no drilling to the natural teeth.

Case 2

In this case, the patient did not like the grey tone of her central incisors due to their translucence, and wanted the lateral incisors to be longer. She opted for 4 composite veneers completed with no alteration to the natural teeth.

Case 2

In this case, the patient did not like the grey tone of her central incisors due to their translucence, and wanted the lateral incisors to be longer. She opted for 4 composite veneers completed with no alteration to the natural teeth.
